Energy Efficiency and Indoor Air Quality in Schools

چکیده
Overview In the 1998-99 school year, U.S. K-12 public schools provided instruction to over 46 million students. An estimated 70% of all school buildings have indoor air quality (IAQ) problems, leading to an unhealthy environment. Because children breathe a greater volume of air relative to their body weight compared to adults, they may be more sensitive to indoor air pollution. Additionally, occupants of school buildings are close together, with approximately four times the occupant density in schools compared to office buildings. A 1995 GAO study reports that ventilation, indoor air quality, temperature (heating and cooling), and lighting are among the leading unsatisfactory environmental conditions in school buildings. Because mounting evidence indicates that the quality of a school’s physical environment affects educational achievement, increased attention to both energy efficiency upgrades and indoor air quality in schools could provide significant benefits.

indoor environment. The most important include indoor pollutants, outdoor pollutants near the building, pollution transport through the ventilation system, air cleaning or filtration, and indoor climate (temperature and relative humidity). Many building materials, the furnishings and equipment, and the occupants and their activities are sources of indoor pollution. Following is a list of some o...

As students spend one-third of their time at school, their health, comfort, and productivity are mostly influenced by thermal condition and indoor air quality of classrooms. Regarding that manual window-opening is a common way for providing fresh air in classes and students aren't allowed to change their uniform, position or control the windows during the lesson hours, providing thermal comf...

The aim of the present work is to maximize indoor environmental quality (IEQ), in particular air quality, and energy performance in schools, when having different ventilation alternatives combined with carbon dioxide feedback. In this effort, trial measurements and energy simulations were conducted to predict and compare the indoor environmental and energy performance in an otherwise similar sc...

Abstract Introduction: Airborne pollution in such public environments as schools has adverse health effects on pupils and teachers who spend a noticeable amount of time in the school. Therefore, this study aimed to measure the suspended particles concentration of indoor and outdoor air of Yazd schools as well as to determine the influencing parameters on the pollution intensity. Metho...
متن کاملEnhancing Productivity While Reducing Energy Use in Buildings
Indoor air quality (IAQ) and air temperature (T) have powerful effects on the efficiency with which work can be performed in schools and offices. Huge amounts of energy are used to keep these parameters constant at levels which represent a compromise between group average requirements for subjective comfort and energy conservation. Human requirements change with task requirements and from hour ...
